Second Sarsanghchalak: Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar (Guruji)

In the journey of a nation, there are certain personalities who do not just influence their own time but shape the thinking and direction of generations to come. Among such towering figures, the name of Madhav Sadashiv Golwalkar is remembered with deep respect and reverence. Fondly known as “Guruji,” he symbolizes guidance, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to the nation.

Guruji was born on 19th February 1906 in Ramtek, Maharashtra. From an early age, he was known for his sharp intellect, serious nature, and spiritual inclination. He pursued higher education at Banaras Hindu University, where he also served as a teacher. However, his aspirations went beyond personal success—he was driven by a deeper purpose to serve society and the nation.

A turning point in his life came when he came in contact with Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Deeply inspired by Dr. Hedgewar’s vision and personality, Guruji dedicated himself completely to the cause of national service. This commitment eventually led him to become the second Sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

In 1940, after the demise of Dr. Hedgewar, Guruji assumed the leadership of the organization. It was a time of immense challenges—India was moving towards independence, and the socio-political environment was highly turbulent. Despite these circumstances, Guruji not only sustained the organization but expanded it across the country.

Guruji firmly believed that the strength of a nation lies in an organized and awakened society. He emphasized discipline, unity, and cultural consciousness as the foundation of nation-building. Under his leadership, the Sangh evolved into a strong ideological as well as organizational force. He articulated Hindutva as a broader cultural identity—one that connects every aspect of life.

His renowned work, Bunch of Thoughts, continues to serve as a key source of his ideas, reflecting his views on nation, society, and culture.

Guruji led an extremely simple and disciplined life. He never sought personal fame or gain; instead, he dedicated his entire life to the service of the nation. He was a leader who chose to remain in the background while empowering the organization and its ideology to move forward.

Under his leadership, the Sangh faced several challenges, yet it emerged stronger each time. This resilience was a result of his patience, foresight, and unwavering conviction.

Guruji passed away on 5th June 1973, but the ideas, structure, and inspiration he built continue to live on. His life teaches us that true leadership lies in uniting people, providing direction, and dedicating oneself to the nation.

Even today, Guruji’s thoughts inspire individuals who aspire to contribute to nation-building. His life remains a shining example of sacrifice, discipline, and patriotism.
